The DAF 600 Proto was a prototype model developed by the Dutch automaker DAF in the 1950s. It was an early version of what would eventually become the production DAF 600, which was introduced to the market in 1959. The DAF 600 Proto was notable for being one of the first cars to feature DAF’s revolutionary Variomatic transmission, a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that set it apart from other small cars of the era.

The DAF 600 Proto was powered by a small air-cooled, twin-cylinder engine, producing around 22 horsepower. While this engine was modest in terms of power, the combination with the innovative Variomatic transmission gave the car smooth acceleration and made it easy to drive, especially in urban environments. The Variomatic system used a belt-driven transmission with pulleys that adjusted automatically to provide seamless, stepless shifts, enhancing the car’s simplicity and convenience for everyday driving.

In terms of design, the DAF 600 Proto was a compact car, intended to appeal to the growing market for affordable and practical vehicles in post-war Europe. The design was simple and functional, focusing on maximizing interior space while keeping the overall dimensions compact. The car was intended to be lightweight and economical, which was a key factor in its appeal to budget-conscious consumers.

Though the DAF 600 Proto was a testbed for DAF’s technical innovations, it never went into full production. However, it laid the foundation for the production version of the DAF 600, which would become the first mass-produced car to feature a continuously variable transmission. The DAF 600 became a popular model in the Netherlands and other parts of Europe, known for its reliability, ease of use, and innovative engineering.

The DAF 600 Proto represents an important step in the development of automatic transmissions, specifically the CVT, which has since become widely used in modern vehicles. Today, the DAF 600 Proto is a significant piece of automotive history, particularly in the evolution of transmission technology, and it is remembered for its role in bringing innovative solutions to the small car market of the 1950s.
