Buick Regal GNX Coupe

The Buick Regal GNX Coupe is one of the most iconic and sought-after American performance cars of the 1980s. Introduced in 1987 as the ultimate expression of Buick’s turbocharged Grand National series, the GNX (which stands for “Grand National Experimental”) was a limited-production, high-performance version that redefined what a Buick could be.

At the heart of the GNX was a turbocharged and intercooled 3.8-liter V6 engine. Tuned in partnership with ASC/McLaren, the GNX produced a conservatively rated 276 horsepower and a massive 360 lb-ft of torque. In reality, it likely made closer to 300 horsepower, and its performance was nothing short of stunning for the era. With a 0–60 mph time of under 5 seconds and quarter-mile times in the high 13-second range, the GNX outpaced many sports cars of its time—including the Chevrolet Corvette.

The GNX featured more than just raw power. It included suspension upgrades, a limited-slip rear differential, stiffer springs, and unique rear suspension geometry to improve traction and handling. Wider Goodyear Eagle tires and special black mesh wheels completed the performance package, ensuring that the GNX could put its power to the ground with confidence.

Visually, the GNX maintained the sinister, all-black look of the Grand National but added subtle enhancements. Fender flares, functional fender vents, and GNX badging set it apart from the standard Regal. The car had an aggressive, muscular stance that hinted at the performance beneath the surface without going over the top.

Inside, the GNX retained the standard Regal layout but added a Stewart-Warner analog gauge cluster, a GNX-specific dash plaque with the car’s production number, and special trim. While not overly luxurious, the interior reflected the GNX’s mission: all-business performance with a touch of Buick comfort.

Only 547 units of the GNX were produced, making it one of the rarest and most collectible Buicks ever built. Its combination of limited numbers, raw power, and legendary status has made it a prized possession among collectors and muscle car fans.

The Buick Regal GNX Coupe is remembered not just as a standout Buick, but as one of the greatest American performance cars of its era. It was a bold statement from a brand not usually associated with high-performance, and its legend continues to grow with each passing year.
